GOD’S LOVE FOR HIS CHILDREN

Opening a song with the query, “Who am I, that the Lord of all the earth would care to know my name, Would care to feel my pain?” is quite humbling. Casting Crowns sets the tone for the audience right away, emphasizing how great God is and how little we are in comparison to Him. “Who Am I?” is the title of one of this popular Christian band’s biggest songs, as well as the question we should all be asking ourselves. In reality, we are only a creative stroke from God’s hand that wields the paintbrush of existence in comparison to Him. But, because He not only made us, but also loves us, even the Greatest One, God Himself, is concerned enough to know our names and feel our pain.

From a human perspective, the pattern of Casting Crowns’ song “Who Am I” looks to be humbling, while glorifying our Creator and God. In the song’s second line, “Who am I, that the eyes that behold my sin” (verse 2), God’s omniscience is revealed. Only God is all-knowing, and it is declared here. The revelation of God’s omnipotence follows with “Who am I, that the voice that calmed the sea.” All-powerful is only God. Finally, we witness God’s omnipresence in verses such as “Would look on me with love and watch me rise again” and “Would speak out through the rain, And quiet the tempest in me.” God is the only one who can be everywhere at the same time. “Can anyone hide himself in secret places so that I do not notice him?” Jeremiah 23:24 says. ‘It is the LORD who speaks,’ declares the LORD.
